I always liked
experimenting with different textures. In this series, I used acrylic color,
paper, gesso primer, cotton gauze pieces and thread over canvas. I also
selected one of my very favorite characters from Indian mythology, Krishna;
the naughty cowherd, the eternal lover and also the Supreme Divine. When He
plays on the flute, its melody bewitches the Gopikas (His childhood playmates),
the cows whom He tends and also the entire cosmos.
The process:
It takes quite a long time to create these paintings. Cutting the canvas into shapes, some big, and some small, then pasting them on the main canvas, then waiting for them to dry completely takes almost 3 days, especially in Assam, because of the moisture in the air. After that I paste the rice paper on. This has to be done in a certain way to create the creases you see on the surface. After that dries completely, the painting starts. I use acrylic mostly, because it dries so quickly. and the colours are so bright. I wait for 2-3 weeks to check again for air bubbles, or any place with gaps. Sometimes I have to put more layers if it looks dull or change them. After I am satisfied that the painting is dry I spray varnish. and it is ready for display.
